Karla Andrea Pérez is a first-generation Mexican-American designer, researcher, and folkloricó dancer from Queens, New York. She received her B.F.A. in Interior Design from the New York Institute of Technology and M.S. in Critical Curatorial and Conceptual Studies in Architecture at Columbia University. Her work explores the role of government documents that speak to immigration laws, ICE, and deportation, as well as how traditional folkloric dance techniques and histories can be used as narrative devices. She brings an architectural spatial perspective that looks to broaden what we interpret to be “architectural” and “spatial.” A critical part of her practice relies on community programming that reclaiming public space through installations and dance as tools of empowerment.
