Welcome to Fashion Design: Beginner and Intermediate (Ages 8-18)

Fashion Design introduces students to some of the basic fundamentals, including fashion illustration, machine sewing, and hand sewing. Students learn how to draw the 10-figure head, sew a basic straight stitch, zigzag stitch, buttonholes, and how to properly install a zipper, piping, top stitching, edge stitching, and under-stitching. Students also learn how to sew different seams (flat-felled, slot, and French) as well a basic straight stitch, running stitch, catch stitch, felling stitch, pick stitch, invisible hem, basting stitch, blanket stitch, French tack, and more. Students create binders to keep their samples for future reference and create a culminating project.
Learning Objectives:
- Fashion Sketching: Students will learn the basics of fashion illustration, including figure proportions, poses, and rendering fabrics and textures.
- Design Principles: Introduction to design principles such as color theory, silhouette, line, shape, and texture in the context of fashion design.
- Garment Construction: Basics of patternmaking, draping, and sewing techniques essential for creating garments from concept sketches to finished pieces.
- Fabric Knowledge: Understanding different types of fabrics, their characteristics, and appropriate uses in garment design.
