Ceramics is a hands-on course designed to introduce students to the basic techniques, processes, and artistic possibilities of working with clay. Through a series of projects and exercises, students will explore various methods of hand-building and wheel-throwing, as well as surface decoration and glazing techniques. The course emphasizes both technical skill development and creative expression in ceramic art.
Learning Objectives:
1. Hand-building Techniques: Students will learn fundamental hand-building techniques such as pinch, coil, and slab construction to create ceramic forms.
2. Wheel-throwing Skills: Students will be introduced to the pottery wheel, learning basic throwing techniques to produce functional and sculptural ceramic pieces.
3. Surface Decoration: Emphasis will be placed on surface decoration techniques including carving, incising, sgraffito, and the application of slips and underglazes to enhance ceramic surfaces.
4. Glazing Methods: Students will explore glazing techniques, including brushing, dipping, and layering glazes to achieve desired colors and surface effects on their ceramic pieces.
5. Understanding Kiln Firing: Basic knowledge of kiln firing processes, temperatures, and types of kilns will be covered, with an emphasis on understanding how firing affects the final outcome of ceramic artworks.
