ARTWorks Presents: Wherever I Lay My Hands

May 9th, 6pm

161-04 Jamaica Avenue

— On May 9th, Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning (JCAL) will open Wherever I Lay My Head, a new group exhibition composed of work from JCAL's ARTWorks artist cohort. The exhibition is curated by Indira A. Abiskaroon, and will feature the work of six ARTWorks fellows. The exhibition will run until June 20th.

ARTWorks Artist fellowship provides the fiscal and technical support to enable fellows to learn the business of art as they expand their professional network. Led by project manager Sherwin Banfield, the cohort has engaged in workshops and consultations with professionals ranging from established artists to attorneys, advisors and curators.

Participating artists include: Marleen Moise, Laura OsCam, Eujin V. Ra,Julia D. Shaw, Courtney Symone Staton, TEDF.

Along with May 9th's opening reception, the exhibition's run will include an artist talk on May 24th, and close with a reception on June 20th. Curator Indira A. Abiskaroon -- who also works as the Curatorial Assistant of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Brooklyn Museum -- will explore the question: what makes a home?

"Spanning collage, film, mixed-media, painting, photography, and more, the artists engage themes of identity, memory, migration, and sanctuary, reflecting on what it means to inherit a place to belong, to leave one for another, and to build one of your own," says Abiskaroon. "Together, their works chart complex emotional and physical geographies of home—not as a fixed place, but as a fluid practice of care and continually evolving site of connection and refuge."
