Parables of the Unknown: The Art of Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and Horror
January 19, 2024 – March 1, 2024
Deadline: October 29th, 2023
Have you ever dreamed of waking up with superpowers, or of traveling back in time to fix your past mistakes? Whether used as an escape from or an interrogation of our present social reality, the speculative arts of science fiction, fantasy, and horror belong to a growing cultural movement that, in recent years, have become important creative outlets for artists of color, women, queer folks, and other marginalized groups.
To welcome the return of our annual JCAL Open Call exhibition, Jamaica Center for Arts & Learning is seeking submissions of original artwork by Queens-based visual artists inspired by science fiction, fantasy, and horror. We are especially interested in artwork that engages the potential these genres have to address everyday concerns, from the personal to the political. Submissions might be inspired by the future, outer space, digital and tech culture, Surrealism, dreams and inner visions, Magical Realism, mysticism, mythology, the occult, the Gothic, and related topics and themes. All visual media is encouraged, including comics and zines, drawing and illustration, painting and sculpture, installation, video, new media, wearable art, cosplay, performance art, architecture, graphic design and more.
Deadline: October 29th, 2023
